Risposta breve
There is corrisponde a “c'è” e si usa con nomi singolari o non numerabili; there are corrisponde a “ci sono” e si usa con i plurali. Some si usa di solito nelle frasi affermative e nelle offerte, any nelle domande e nelle negazioni; much va con i non numerabili, many con i numerabili, a lot of con entrambi.
There is e there are: c'è e ci sono
Per dire che qualcosa esiste o si trova in un certo posto, l'inglese usa there + be. There is (contratto there's) va con un nome singolare o non numerabile: There is a pharmacy near the station (C'è una farmacia vicino alla stazione), There is some milk in the fridge (C'è del latte in frigo). There are va con i plurali: There are two cafés in the square (Ci sono due bar in piazza).
There qui non significa “là”: è un soggetto fittizio, come l'it di It's raining.
Nel parlato informale sentirai spesso there's anche davanti a un plurale (There's lots of people here). È molto comune, ma nello scritto e negli esami è meglio rispettare l'accordo: There are lots of people here.
There's a problem with my booking.
There are some good restaurants in this area.
|---|---|---|
| Affermativa | There is (There's) a bus at nine. | There are three buses a day. |
| Negativa | There isn't any bread. | There aren't any seats. |
| Negativa con no | There's no time. | There are no tickets left. |
| Domanda | Is there a lift? | Are there any questions? |
| Risposta breve | Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. | Yes, there are. / No, there aren't. |
There was, there will be e gli altri tempi
La struttura funziona con tutti i tempi: basta coniugare be. Al passato hai there was e there were (c'era, c'erano / ci fu, ci furono), al futuro there will be (ci sarà, ci saranno), al present perfect there has been e there have been (c'è stato, ci sono stati).
Con i modali la costruzione è there + modale + be: There might be a delay (Potrebbe esserci un ritardo), There must be a mistake (Ci dev'essere un errore).
Non confondere there are con they are. There are introduce qualcosa di nuovo (Ci sono dei libri sul tavolo); they are descrive qualcosa di già noto (Sono sul tavolo): There are some books on the table. They are new.
There was a lot of traffic this morning.
Stamattina c'era un sacco di traffico.
There will be a short meeting at three.
Alle tre ci sarà una breve riunione.
There have been some changes to the timetable.
Ci sono state alcune modifiche all'orario.
Numerabili e non numerabili: information, advice, people
Per scegliere fra is e are, e poi fra much e many, devi sapere se un nome è numerabile (countable) o non numerabile (uncountable).
Quindi “molte informazioni” è a lot of information, e “un consiglio” è a piece of advice o semplicemente some advice.
Al contrario, people è plurale, anche se “la gente” in italiano è singolare: People are friendly here. News, invece, finisce in -s ma è singolare: The news is good (Le notizie sono buone).
| Nome inglese | Tipo | Esempio corretto | Italiano |
|---|---|---|---|
| information | non numerabile | I need some information. | Mi servono delle informazioni. |
| advice | non numerabile | Can I give you some advice? | Posso darti un consiglio? |
| furniture | non numerabile | We bought new furniture. | Abbiamo comprato mobili nuovi. |
| news | non numerabile, singolare | The news is on at eight. | Il telegiornale è alle otto. |
| people | plurale | Many people are waiting. | Ci sono molte persone che aspettano. |
| hair | di solito non numerabile | She has long hair. | Ha i capelli lunghi. |
Some e any: non solo affermativo contro negativo
Some e any corrispondono spesso al partitivo italiano (del, dei, delle) o a “qualche, un po' di”. La regola di partenza è nota: some nelle frasi affermative, any nelle negative e nelle domande. There's some cheese, but there isn't any bread. Have you got any brothers or sisters? (in americano più spesso Do you have any brothers or sisters?)
Would you like some tea? (Vuoi un po' di tè?), Can I have some water, please? Any, invece, nelle frasi affermative significa “qualsiasi”: You can take any bus from here (Da qui puoi prendere qualsiasi autobus).
Anche in inglese any a volte si omette (Do you have questions?), ma di solito con any la frase suona più naturale: Do you have any questions?, I don't have any money. In alternativa, la negazione si può fare con no: I have no money, There are no eggs.
Would you like some biscuits?
Vuoi dei biscotti?
Nota: Offerta: some anche in una domanda.
We don't have any milk left.
Non abbiamo più latte.
Call me any time.
Chiamami quando vuoi.
Nota: Any in frase affermativa = qualsiasi.
Much, many e a lot of: quanto e quanti
Much si usa con i non numerabili, many con i numerabili plurali. Per le domande sulla quantità hai How much…? (quanto?) e How many…? (quanti?): How much time do we have? How many people are coming?
Nelle frasi negative e nelle domande much e many sono normalissimi: I don't have much time, Are there many students in your class? Nelle frasi affermative, invece, much suona formale o innaturale nel parlato: al posto di I have much work si dice I have a lot of work. Many in frase affermativa è corretto ma un po' più formale: Many people think so va benissimo, ma nella conversazione si sente spesso a lot of people.
A lot of e lots of (più informale) vanno con entrambi i tipi di nome: a lot of money, a lot of friends. Much e many restano però naturali anche in frase affermativa dopo too, so e as: There's too much noise, You've made so many mistakes, Take as much as you want.
How much luggage are you taking?
Quanti bagagli porti?
Nota: Luggage è non numerabile: how much, anche se in italiano diciamo “quanti”.
There are a lot of tourists in July.
| Parola | Con quali nomi | Uso tipico | Esempio |
|---|---|---|---|
| much | non numerabili | domande e negazioni | There isn't much sugar. |
| many | numerabili plurali | domande e negazioni; affermative più formali | Are there many hotels? |
| a lot of / lots of | entrambi | soprattutto affermative | There's a lot of snow. |
| a few | numerabili plurali | “qualche, alcuni”: tutti i tipi di frase | There are a few chairs left. |
| a little | non numerabili | “un po' di”: tutti i tipi di frase | There's a little coffee left. |
| How much / How many | non numerabili / numerabili | domande sulla quantità | How many rooms are there? |
“Le informazioni” diventa informations, “la gente è” diventa people is, “non c'è nessuno” diventa there isn't nobody.
“C'è il sole” è It's sunny, “c'è vento” è It's windy. E “ci sono stato” non c'entra con there are: significa “sono stato lì”, cioè I've been there.
Infine, there is serve a presentare qualcosa di nuovo, non a localizzare qualcosa di già noto. Se cerchi le chiavi e le trovi, dici They're on the table, non There are on the table. Se invece entri in una stanza e noti qualcosa per la prima volta: There are some keys on the table.
| Errore tipico | Forma corretta | Perché |
|---|---|---|
| Thank you for the informations. | Thank you for the information. | Information è non numerabile |
| The people is very kind. | The people are very kind. | People è plurale |
| There are much people. | There are a lot of people. / There are many people. | People è numerabile: many, o a lot of nel parlato |
| There isn't nobody here. | There isn't anybody here. / There's nobody here. | Niente doppia negazione |
| There is sun today. | It's sunny today. | Il tempo atmosferico usa it |
| Can you give me an advice? | Can you give me some advice? | Advice non vuole an |

1. Completa con is o are: “There ___ a lot of people at the concert.”
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
There are a lot of people at the concert.
A lot of non cambia l'accordo.
2. Correggi la frase: “I need some informations about the course.”
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
I need some information about the course.
3. Completa con some o any: “Would you like ___ coffee?”
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Would you like some coffee?
4. Completa con much o many: “How ___ suitcases have you got?”
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
How many suitcases have you got?
Suitcase è numerabile, quindi How many. Con luggage, che è non numerabile, si direbbe How much luggage.
5. Traduci in inglese: “Non c'è molto tempo.”
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
There isn't much time.
Time qui è non numerabile, quindi much. Nelle frasi negative much è del tutto naturale.
