What the CEFR levels mean

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes language ability on six levels, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). Schools and employers often use these levels, and exams such as IELTS and TOEFL map their scores to them.

    • Introduce yourself and ask simple questions
    • Understand very common words and phrases
    • Have a simple conversation if the other person speaks slowly and clearly
  2. A2 · Elementary

You can handle simple, routine situations and talk about the past in short sentences.

    • Describe your daily routine, family and work
    • Talk about past events with the past simple

  4. B2 · Upper intermediate

You can talk and write about a wide range of topics with good control of grammar.

    • Take part in discussions with native speakers

  5. C1 · Advanced
