Positive degree membandingkan dua hal yang sama: 'Rina is as tall as her mother.' Comparative degree membandingkan dua hal yang berbeda dengan -er atau more + than: 'Jakarta is bigger than Bandung', 'This phone is more expensive than that one.' Superlative degree menunjukkan yang paling dari tiga atau lebih dengan the + -est atau the most: 'Jakarta is the biggest city in Indonesia', 'This is the most expensive phone in the shop.' Kata pendek (satu suku kata) memakai -er/-est; kata panjang memakai more/most.

Pelajar Indonesia sering membuat tiga kesalahan khas. Kedua, 'lebih besar dari' menjadi 'bigger from', padahal pasangannya selalu than.

  1. 1. biggerAda than → comparative. Big adalah kata satu suku kata yang berakhiran konsonan-vokal-konsonan, jadi huruf terakhir digandakan: big → bigger. 'More big' salah karena kata pendek memakai -er.
  2. 2. the highest'In the world' membandingkan dengan semua gunung → superlative: the highest. Superlative selalu memakai the, dan kata pendek seperti high memakai -est, bukan most.
  3. 3. moreExpensive adalah kata panjang (tiga suku kata), jadi comparative-nya memakai more: more expensive than. Most dan the most untuk superlative, dan tidak dipakai bersama than.
  4. 4. asPositive degree untuk menyatakan 'sama ...-nya' memakai pola as + adjective + as: as tall as. 'Setinggi ibuku' tidak memakai kata 'dari', jadi than tidak dipakai di sini.
  5. 5. hotterHot berakhiran konsonan-vokal-konsonan (h-o-t), jadi huruf t digandakan sebelum -er: hotter. Begitu juga big → bigger, thin → thinner, fat → fatter.
  6. 6. happiestAdjective berakhiran konsonan + y mengganti y menjadi i: happy → happier → the happiest. 'The ... of my life' menandakan superlative, jadi happier tidak cocok.
  7. 7. betterGood adalah adjective tidak beraturan: good → better → the best. 'Gooder' dan 'more good' tidak dipakai dalam bahasa Inggris standar.
  8. 8. worstBad tidak beraturan: bad → worse → the worst. 'The ... I have ever seen' adalah pola superlative, jadi worst, bukan worse (comparative).
  9. 9. thanComparative selalu berpasangan dengan than. 'Lebih tinggi dari adiknya' membuat pelajar menulis 'taller from', padahal from tidak pernah dipakai untuk perbandingan.
  10. 10. fasterFast adalah kata satu suku kata, jadi comparative-nya fast + er = faster. Ada than → comparative, bukan superlative fastest.
  11. 11. easierEasy berakhiran konsonan + y → easier. 'More easier' salah karena memakai dua penanda comparative sekaligus (more dan -er), kesalahan yang muncul dari 'lebih mudah' yang diterjemahkan dua kali.
  12. 12. the cleverest'In your class' membandingkan dengan semua siswa → superlative: the cleverest (the most clever juga dipakai). 'Most clever' tanpa the salah, dan the cleverer/the more clever adalah comparative.
  13. 13. fartherFar tidak beraturan: far → farther/further → the farthest/furthest. Untuk jarak fisik, keduanya benar. 'More far' dan 'farer' tidak dipakai.
  14. 14. lessLittle (untuk kata benda tak terhitung seperti money) tidak beraturan: little → less → the least. Ada than → comparative: less money than.
  15. 15. moreMany dan much keduanya punya comparative more dan superlative the most. Karena ada than, jawabannya more: more friends than. Penggunaan much vs many dibahas di soal much dan many.
  16. 16. the mostInteresting adalah kata panjang, dan 'in the library' membandingkan dengan semua buku → the most interesting. Superlative wajib memakai the.
  17. 17. betterPlayed adalah kata kerja, jadi kita membandingkan adverb well. Well juga tidak beraturan: well → better → best. Jadi bentuk comparative-nya tetap better.
  18. 18. bigPola as ... as selalu memakai bentuk positive (dasar): not as big as. 'Not as bigger as' salah karena as ... as tidak digabung dengan bentuk comparative.
  19. 19. wetterWet berakhiran konsonan-vokal-konsonan, jadi t digandakan: wetter.
  20. 20. the cheapest'Of the three' berarti membandingkan tiga benda atau lebih → superlative: the cheapest. Comparative hanya untuk dua hal.
  21. 21. much moreUntuk memperkuat comparative, pakai much, far, atau a lot SEBELUM more/-er: much more dangerous, much bigger. Very tidak bisa dipakai dengan comparative: 'very more' dan 'very bigger' salah.
  22. 22. more / betterPola the + comparative, the + comparative berarti 'semakin ..., semakin ...': The more you practise, the better you become. Kedua bagian wajib memakai comparative.
  23. 23. as expensive asUntuk kesamaan, pakai as + adjective + as. 'The same expensive as' terjemahan dari 'sama mahalnya dengan', tapi the same dipakai dengan kata benda: the same price as.
  24. 24. She is prettier than her sister.Pretty → prettier (y menjadi i + er). More dan -er tidak boleh dipakai bersamaan, dan the tidak dipakai sebelum comparative yang diikuti than.
  25. 25. My house is smaller than yours.'Lebih kecil dari' → smaller than. Small adalah kata pendek, jadi -er, bukan more. Yours (milikmu) menggantikan 'your house' agar tidak diulang.
  26. 26. the bestPola one of + the + superlative + kata benda jamak: one of the best restaurants.
Ada than → comparative, bukan superlative.
  28. 28. the farthest'Of all my friends' membandingkan dengan semua teman → superlative: the farthest (the furthest juga benar). Adverb superlative kadang dipakai tanpa the dalam percakapan, tapi 'the farer' tidak pernah benar.
  29. 29. more modernModern terdiri dari dua suku kata dan tidak berakhiran -y, jadi memakai more: more modern. Kata dua suku kata yang berakhiran -y (easy, happy, busy) yang memakai -er.
  30. 30. higherHigh adalah kata satu suku kata → higher than. Kalimat ini membandingkan dua gunung, jadi comparative, bukan superlative highest.

Degrees of Comparison Adalah: Pengertian dan Tiga Tingkatnya

Degrees of comparison adalah bentuk perbandingan adjective dan adverb. Bahasa Indonesia memakai kata terpisah ('sama ...-nya', 'lebih', 'paling'), sedangkan bahasa Inggris sering mengubah bentuk katanya sendiri (tall → taller → the tallest).

  • Positive degree (setara): S + to be + as + adjective + as + pembanding. Contoh: Rina is as tall as her mother. / This bag is not as expensive as that one.
  • Comparative degree (lebih): S + to be + adjective-er / more + adjective + than + pembanding. Contoh: Jakarta is bigger than Bandung. / Gold is more expensive than silver.
  • Superlative degree (paling): S + to be + the + adjective-est / the most + adjective. Contoh: Jakarta is the biggest city in Indonesia. / This is the most expensive phone in the shop.

Kata petunjuk superlative: in the world, in my class, of all, of the three, ever.

Kapan Pakai -er/-est dan Kapan Pakai More/Most

  • Kata satu suku kata → -er/-est: tall → taller → the tallest, cheap → cheaper → the cheapest.
  • Kata dua suku kata berakhiran -y → ganti y jadi i: easy → easier → the easiest, busy → busier → the busiest.
  • Kata dua suku kata lain dan kata tiga suku kata atau lebih → more/most: modern → more modern, beautiful → more beautiful → the most beautiful.
  • Beberapa kata dua suku kata bisa memakai keduanya: clever, narrow, quiet, simple (cleverer / more clever).
  • Adverb berakhiran -ly → more/most: carefully → more carefully → the most carefully.

Aturan Ejaan Comparative dan Superlative

  • Umumnya + er/est: small → smaller → the smallest.
  • Berakhiran -e → cukup + r/st: large → larger → the largest, nice → nicer → the nicest.
  • Konsonan-vokal-konsonan → gandakan huruf terakhir: big → bigger, hot → hotter, thin → thinner, wet → wetter.
  • Konsonan + y → ganti y jadi i: happy → happier → the happiest, heavy → heavier → the heaviest.

Bentuk Tidak Beraturan (Irregular)

  • good / well → better → the best
  • bad / badly → worse → the worst
  • far → farther / further → the farthest / the furthest
  • little (tak terhitung) → less → the least
  • many / much → more → the most

Jangan pernah menulis 'gooder', 'baddest', atau 'more better'. Better dan worse sudah berbentuk comparative.

Kesalahan Khas Orang Indonesia: 'More Bigger' dan 'Bigger From'

Dalam bahasa Inggris, pembanding selalu didahului than, bukan from: 'lebih besar dari' → bigger than. From menunjukkan asal atau titik awal, bukan perbandingan.

  • My house is more bigger than yours. → My house is bigger than yours.
  • Bali is bigger from Lombok. → Bali is bigger than Lombok.
  • She is the most smart in the class. → She is the smartest in the class.
  • It's very better now. → It's much better now.
  • He is as tall than me. → He is as tall as me.
  • This is one of the best restaurant in town. → This is one of the best restaurants in town.

Pertanyaan Umum

Apa itu degrees of comparison?

Ada tiga tingkat: positive (as tall as), comparative (taller than, more expensive than), dan superlative (the tallest, the most expensive).

Bagaimana rumus comparative degree?

Rumusnya S + to be + adjective-er + than untuk kata pendek ('Jakarta is bigger than Bandung'), dan S + to be + more + adjective + than untuk kata panjang ('Gold is more expensive than silver'). Jangan memakai more dan -er sekaligus, dan selalu pakai than, bukan from.

Kenapa 'more bigger' salah?

Untuk memperkuat perbandingan, pakai much atau far: much bigger, far more beautiful.
