In, On, At : les Prépositions Anglaises

Pourquoi in the morning mais on Monday mais at 9 o'clock ?

A) in Monday
B) on Monday
C) at Monday
Explication : Les jours se construisent avec ON : on Monday, on the 10th of August.
A) on 2026
B) at 2026
C) in 2026
Explication : Les années se construisent avec IN : in 2026, in 1985. Comme les mois (in August) et les saisons (in winter). C'est le niveau « général ».
3« À 9 heures » se dit…Voir la réponse
A) at 9 o'clock
B) on 9 o'clock
C) in 9 o'clock
Explication : Les heures précises utilisent AT : at 9 o'clock, at noon, at midnight.
A) in the restaurant
B) at the restaurant
C) on the restaurant
Explication : Quand on parle d'une activité (dîner, travailler), on utilise AT : We had dinner at the restaurant. IN insiste sur le lieu physique : We sat in the restaurant.

In = vue large. On = vue moyenne. At = gros plan.

In, on, at pour le temps

PrépositionPrécisionExemples
INgénéral (grand)in 2026, in August, in winter, in the morning, in the 21st century
ONjour / date préciseon Monday, on the 10th of August, on my birthday, on New Year's Day
ATheure / moment exactat 9 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at the weekend (GB), at the moment
I will call you on 9 o'clock.I will call you at 9 o'clock.
She was born in March 1990 at Monday.…in March 1990 on a Monday.

In, on, at pour le lieu

PrépositionLogiqueExemples
INà l'intérieur / grand espacein Paris, in France, in the garden, in my bag, in the office (lieu)
ONsur une surfaceon the table, on the wall, on the floor, on the bus, on the coast
ATpoint / lieu d'activitéat the door, at the corner, at the airport, at school, at work, at the restaurant (dîner)

La nuance at/in : at school = on y est pour étudier (activité), in the school = on est dans le bâtiment. De même at the restaurant (y dîner) contre in the restaurant (être à l'intérieur du bâtiment).

Les exceptions à connaître

Les moments du jour : in the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening, MAIS at night, at noon, at midnight.
Le week-end : at the weekend (GB) / on the weekend (US). Les deux sont corrects — choisissez votre variante.
Les transports : on the bus / on the train / on the plane (on monte à bord), MAIS in the car / in a taxi (on est assis et confiné).
last / next / every : aucune préposition ! Last Monday, next year, every day — jamais on last Monday.

In, on, at dans les expressions fixes

IN : in charge of (responsable de), in advance (à l'avance), in a hurry (pressé), in love with (amoureux de), interested in (intéressé par), in the end (finalement).
ON : on time (à l'heure), on purpose (exprès), on the phone (au téléphone), on fire (en feu), on sale (en solde), congratulations on (félicitations pour).
AT : at least (au moins), at once (immédiatement), at home (à la maison), good at (doué pour), at the moment (en ce moment), angry at (en colère contre).
I am interested for…I am interested in… I am good for…I am good at…

Les erreurs typiques des francophones

I am going in Paris.I am going to Paris. (destination = to)
He is married with Sophie. He is married to Sophie. (to, pas with)
I listen music.I listen to music. (listen to, pas listen tout court)
She is afraid from spiders. She is afraid of spiders. (afraid of)
I arrived at France.I arrived in France. / I arrived at the airport. (grand espace = in, point = at)

Questions fréquentes

Pourquoi 'at home' et pas 'in home' ?

Mais on dit bien in my house, in the kitchen. Retenez : at home, tout court.

'On time' ou 'in time' ?

on time = à l'heure prévue (The train arrived on time). in time = à temps, juste assez tôt (We got there in time for the movie).

Faut-il une préposition avec 'every day' ou 'last week' ?

Non. Last Monday, next year, every day, this morning, today — aucune préposition.
